I often hear children comment in relation to the first sin in the garden of Eden. They often say something along the lines of “If I was Adam (or Eve), I wouldn't have eaten that fruit.” Some of these children comment on how foolish it was of Adam and Eve to have disobeyed God when they were in this beautiful garden. However, such thoughts are incorrect no matter how good of a kid you are or how much you know.
Every one of us would make that exact same decision, and indeed, do so again and again. We have inherited that same sin from Adam and Eve. When they chose to listen to a Satan disguised as a snake, which they had command over, instead of God who created them, they let that temptation into them. They tainted their very beings with sin, and destroyed the world. Because of their sin, sinful nature has been an inherited trait that comes in each one of us. Psalm 51:5 reads “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”
Our Sinful nature is like a plague passed down into us. Because of it, Satan and his demons can tempt us with ease. But of course, the story does not end there. Jesus came to earth, he was born of Woman, fully Human, but she was impregnated by God (not in any inappropriate way). This meant he was without sinful nature. And while fully human and tempted by Satan, he was also fully God and could resist the sin. Jesus lived a perfect life. By sacrificing himself even though he did not deserve death, he took the place of every one of us, allowing us to be forgiven if we only repent.
This is very significant to every one of us. Because we have inherited our sinful nature, none of us can be redeemed on our own. Only God and the gift of Jesus Christ can save us from our fate, all we have to do is accept his perfect gift.
